5 home remedies for blocked nose

Most people experience nasal congestion because of colds, allergies, viral infections, or dry air. This cold can sometimes take a few weeks to settle down. Fortunately, there are many simple home remedies that can provide gentle relief by thinning the mucus and soothing inflamed nasal passages. This further makes breathing slightly easier. From using steamers to maintaining proper hydration, these home remedies can help clear a blocked nose comfortably over a period of time.

Hydration

One of the easiest ways to get relief from a blocked nose is to drink plenty of fluids. Options like water, herbal teas, fresh fruit juices, smoothies, warm lemon water (with honey) and bone broth can help one stay hydrated throughout the day. These fluids help ease the congestion caused by thickened mucus. Additionally, these fluids help prevent dryness in the nasal area, which often worsens the stuffiness.

Steam inhalation

Inhalation of warm steam can effectively open up congested nasal airways. The steam adds moisture to the dry and inflamed tissues inside the nose. To do this, a simple setup works well enough. Fill a bowl with hot water, but avoid using boiling water to prevent burns. Carefully lean over the warm water and cover the head with a towel to trap the steam. This works as a personal sauna. Gently breathe in the steam for about 7 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, a hot shower can be an effective, natural remedy for clearing nasal congestion. The inhaled moisture from the steam helps reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and moisturizes dry sinuses, making it easier to breathe comfortably.

Humidifier

A blocked nose often occurs when the nasal passages become inflamed and swollen, causing discomfort. The symptoms are further worsened when the indoor air is dry. So, by adding moisture to indoor air with the help of a humidifier, the discomfort caused by dry air can be avoided to a great extent. This further helps to reduce swelling and provide relief, making it easier to breathe.

A cool-mist humidifier can be placed in the bedroom to maintain comfortable humidity levels overnight. The clean air helps to sleep better, even with a stuffy nose. However, cleaning the humidifier regularly is important, as stagnant water can lead to mineral build-up or mold growth that can be easily circulated in the air. One can clean the device with a solution of vinegar and water (50/50) or follow the maintenance instructions mentioned in the user manual.

Warm compress

Gentle warmth from a compress can help relieve built-up pressure around the sinuses, nose, and forehead. To make a compress, take a clean washcloth and soak it in warm water. Wring out the excess water and place the cloth over the sinus area for five to ten minutes, and then move it over the forehead. As the cloth cools, refresh it by soaking it in warm water again and reapply. This process can be repeated more than twice in a day.

Nasal irrigation

Saline nasal irrigation gently flushes out excess mucus, allergens, and irritants directly from the nasal passages. For this process, one can use a neti pot or a squeeze bottle.

To prepare the saline solution, fill the device with a mixture of distilled, sterile, or boiled-and-cooled water and non-iodized salt. Tilt the head to one side over the sink, pour the solution into the upper nostril, and let it flow out of the other. Repeat this process on the opposite side.

Remember to always use a fresh saline solution during repeated nasal irrigation. Also, make sure to dry the device thoroughly to maintain hygiene and effectiveness.
